A recent complaint filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration provides detailed examples of the false and misleading nature of four nationally known brands of milk and dozens of other examples of milk label, advertising and web site claims which violate federal and state guidelines and regulations for the labeling and marketing of dairy products. Recent consumer research shows these claims mislead consumers into falsely believing that some milk has superior health, nutrition, safety or other qualities.
Published data shows consumers (children in particular) are drinking less milk, suggesting that while this type of marketing is attempting to drive consumers to their individual brands of milk, they may also be helping to drive consumers away from an important component of a healthy diet to other less-nutritious beverages.
